Visiting Macungie Borough Hall? Sign In, Please.

Macungie Mayor and Council more security is needed at police station and borough office.

Mayor Rick Hoffman announced at the Oct. 3 Macungie Borough Council meeting that he has instituted a sign-in system for all non-employees of the borough for anyone entering the secured area of the police station.

All visitors, except borough employees and council members, to the police station who enter the secured area are currently, and will continue to be, escorted to their desired area.

In addition, visitors will need to log in, log out and state the reason for being there. Hoffman said that if someone is at the police station due to a sensitive issue or for something confidential, they will be assigned an incident number and not have to log in or out.

“And the reason for this?” asked Dorothy Kociuba, council person.

“It is to prevent people from just wandering around the police station,” said Hoffman.  “There’s sensitive material in there.”

David Boyko, as well the other council members, supported the mayor’s decision, and suggesting that the borough offices should also have a sign-in procedure.

Chris Boehm, borough manager, said, “People do come behind the counter.  I have no problem with [a sign-in procedure].”

Kociuba suggested council just “give it a try” before writing a policy.

Council agreed and, according to Boehm, the trial sign-in procedure will begin immediately and continue until December.  It will then be evaluated to see if a policy needs to be written.
