Woof: Macungie Council Likes the Idea of a Dog Park

The concept of a dog park is in the most elementary stages.

Toward the (wagging) tail end of Monday's meeting of Macungie Borough Council, president Chris Becker turned council's attention to a patch of land at the very end of Race Street.

At times Spruce Park has been used as a vegetable garden, he said, but in recent times interest has fallen off.

"We could make it a dog park," Becker said, "They're pretty popular right now. It might need a fence."

Restrictions on the land say that it must be used for passive recreation, Borough Manager Chris Boehm said, and a dog park would fit the bill.

And a survey done not too long ago said that residents would like to see a dog park in the borough, she said.

Councilman Linn Walker said there has been talk about blacktopping the park to make a space for people to park campers and boats in the off-season, but Boehm said that would not fit with the passive recreation restriction.

Putting up a fence and turning the area into a dog park might even make a good Eagle Scout project, Boehm suggested.

No action has yet been taken on the idea.
