Local Victory for Open Space Preservation!

Bethlehem Township Commissioners recently dropped support for a proposal to build a sprawling apartment-retail complex next to environmentally sensitive Monocacy Creek.

Bethlehem Township Commissioners recently dropped support for a proposal to build a sprawling apartment-retail complex next to the environmentally sensitive Monocacy Creek. This is the creek that experienced major flooding during this past years Musikfest washing away the lower area and causing major damage.

The proposal has faced opposition from local organizations and residents as it would have required deviating from a current conservation overlay zoning.

This is a heartening victory other local land preservation organizations and a community in general that clearly values open space preservation and smart growth guided policy.

Commissioner Tom Nolan was alone in supporting preservation efforts until commissioners Zawarski and Barnard came on board after public outcry.

"I'm in favor of growth, but this parcel is zoned in an area considered the least favorable to dense development. This will have a major impact on the area,'' Martin Zawarski said.

"Said he can't support it because the township's comprehensive plan clearly shows it is not good for dense development." - Phil Barnard

These quotes show two very positive items. These commissioners understand the importance of adhering to planning and are sensitive to the concerns of the residents who elected them.

They deserve the highest of praise for enacting policy that serves their township and the community and not developers! This is encouraging for those of us who live in Lower Macungie. Folks, you can make a difference!
