Dennis Sell III Earns Eagle

The Dieruff valedictorian is a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dennis Sell III, 18, was one of six members of Boy Scout Troop 431 of East Texas to receive his Eagle Award Feb. 4 at in Wescosville.

Sell began scouting 11 years ago as a Cub Scout, and has served Troop 431 as a patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, troop guide and librarian. He earned the “Scout Leaders’ Recognition Award” in 2009. 

He is an Ordeal member of Order of the Arrow, the induction into which, according to the Boy Scouts of America, requires that the scout complete an ordeal which is intended to emphasize service and self-sacrifice. Candidates maintain complete silence, sleep alone overnight, receive small amounts of food and perform camp work projects.

He earned 30 merit badges, hiked 319 miles and camped 100 nights with Troop 431.  Sell also attended Resica Falls Summer Camp 2004-2009, and the High Adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in 2009.

For his Eagle project, Dennis renovated a section of Keck Park in Allentown. The restoration included removal of trees, brush, and boulders and re-landscaping. The project also included refurbishing a park railing, reinforcing it with concrete, and constructing and anchoring a new picnic table.

Dennis lives with his mother and father, Dennis and Charlene, twin sister Deidre, and his grandmother, Barbara.

Outside of Scouting, Dennis plays percussion. During high school, he served as section leader of the Dieruff Drum-Line and captain of the Dieruff Scholastic Scrimmage team. He was the Dieruff High School 2011 valedictorian.

At Penn, Dennis intends to double-major in Computer Science and Mathematics and hopes to pursue graduate education.
