Name: The Lievre family—Shelly and Kevin, Kyle (17) and Laura (15)
Hometown: Lower Macungie Township
Occupations: Kevin is employed at Air Products. Shelly works part time for Sodexo at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Kyle is a senior at and mows lawns for extra cash. And Laura is a tenth-grader at Emmaus High School and babysits in her spare time.
Name of organization: The Fresh Air Fund
Describe what you do: “All Fresh Air children come from New York City and are generally 6 to 12 years old, but can be up to 18. Families in a country or suburban setting host a child for one to two weeks in the summer giving them experiences they would not get in the city.
“We had to all have background checks, a clear driving record, an interview with the organizer and other things.
“The child lives with the host family, basically do what they do,” Shelly said.
Why and how long have you volunteered? “This is our first year hosting a Fresh Air child. We chose to do this to have a kid in the house again and to give them different experiences. Being here is the opposite of where they live in the city,” she said.
Will you do this again? “We will most definitely do this again next year and we hope to have JC, who is 10-years-old, here for two weeks instead of one.
“We plan to keep a relationship with him. We have emailed and talked with him several times since his visit in July. We plan to visit him at his home in the near future.
“As a matter of fact, before leaving, JC said, ‘I’m coming back here!’ He left some of his things in ‘his’ room,” Laura said.
What sorts of things did you do while JC was here? “JC likes artistic activities, as does Laura, so they fit together very well. Laura taught him to draw faces during his visit. He also made a piece of abstract art involving the family. He learned to use a drill while putting together wood and wire pieces. He was very proud of it.
“We took him to a drive-in movie, a water park, Dorney Park, and several other places during his stay with us. One day he and Kyle spent an afternoon making homemade pizza together.
“He was very adamant about family time every day and wanted us to always eat and play games together,” Shelly said.
How can someone get involved with this group if they want? “To get information about sponsoring a Fresh Air child, call Jenae Holtzhafer, Lower Lehigh County Chair, at 484-350-9300; email the Fresh Air Fund; or visit their website.”
