A Concert to Remember

It was an evening to remember visiting the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Temple Square Orchestra.

Joy & I, along with two other bus loads of seniors traveled to The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, to hear a beautiful concert as presented by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Temple Square Orchestra.

The evening was wonderful in that we were picked up by our Bieber Coach at the LMT Community Center and dropped off at the Mann Center entrance gate.

One thing most who haven’t been to the Mann Center hadn’t expected was the climb to our seats in the balcony. The topography of the site is on a hill (making the stage line of vision excellent), however getting up there was another matter. Most seniors have walking problems (not yours truly) and shy away from hills, long walks, etc. Well….after a few grunts and complaints all got seated and for the next two hours were mesmerized by the music presented by the magnificent choir and orchestra.

All participants are volunteer and some are couples….ladies (choir/orchestra) & men (same). This makes for a much better spouse relationship for the eight day trip out of Salt lake City, Utah. The choir ladies numbered about 150 (give or take a few), while the men came in at about 160 (again give or take a few). It was difficult to estimate the orchestra with all the violin bows moving in the same direction most of the evening….but there were a quite a enough to fill the air with beautiful music.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Temple Square Orchestra tour the country every other year…the last time they were in Philadelphia was 2003. The capacity crowd thoroughly enjoyed the event and was pleased when presented with two “curtain calls." Upon leaving the Mann Center it’s every car for themselves, so our buses were a little late in picking us up. Waiting wasn’t much of a problem, the breeze was pleasant and at that time, no rain.

On the way home however our bus did encounter a pretty violent rain storm (even lost a windshield wiper) that lasted well into our journey end back at the LMT Community Center. Luckily our automobiles were parked pretty close but running through the downpour wasn’t my idea of a way of concluding a wonderful night of music (we all got soaked).

The concert was publicized several months ago by Pat Vassilaros, the former LMT Tax Collector and member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Pat spoke to our LMT seniors encouraging them to take in the once in a lifetime program. Many of our seniors signed up, thus the reason for the several bus load of travelers. Many thanks to Pat for setting up our transportation and discounted tickets. We all had a ball. Were you one of the attendees?
