Borough of Macungie

Macungie Passes Revised 2012 Budget

The borough's new millage rate is 8.95.

Macungie Council passed a second annual budget for 2012 at its meeting on Feb. 6. The $3.4 million budget calls for a tax increase of 1.45 mils for a total borough millage of 8.4. For residents whose homes are assessed at the borough average of $67,000, the proposed 1.45-mil increase would mean an annual tax bill of  $562.80, an increase of $97.16 over taxes paid in 2011. The budget restores some, but not all, of what Borough Manager Chris Boehm called "quality of life in the borough." It will restore: It will not restore: After a lengthy executive session to discuss personnel, council voted unanimously to hire Jordan Sonka of Allentown and Michaell Salvo Jr. of Conshohocken as part-time police officers who will be paid an hourly rate of $…

Macungie Council Agrees on Second Proposed Budget

Some, but not all, "quality of life" elements were restored.

Macungie Council approved a second preliminary budget for 2012 at its Jan. 17 meeting. After months of budget workshop meetings beginning in October, and several end-of-year council meetings where few members could agree, the seven-member council passed an austere 11th-hour budget just in time to allow for a 10-day public viewing of the original preliminary effort. They passed it  -- with a .68 of a mil tax increase -- on Dec. 28. Two weeks ago, Borough Manager Chris Boehm called on council -- with its three new members -- to re-open the budget and raise taxes by 2 mils which, she said, would “restore the quality of life” in the borough. But at a budget workshop meeting on Jan. 12, council members came together on a plan that would raise …

Five Things to Know Today: December 13

"Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans." - John Lennon

1. Weather: A little warmer and still nice. The National Weather Service forecast for our area says today will be sunny with a high near 46 degrees. 2. In Cast You Missed It: Here's what's shaking throughout the East Penn School District this week. 3. What a Day!: Did you enjoy Macungie Holiday last Saturday? See anybody you know in our gallery? 4. Coming Up: Find out what happened at the special council meeting last night. 5. Today in History: On this day in 2000, Vice President Al Gore reluctantly conceded defeat to Texas Governor George W. Bush in his bid for the presidency, following weeks of legal battles over the recounting of votes in Florida.

Council Fails to Approve Preliminary 2012 Budget

Even cutting of jobs and services will not avoid a tax increase.

One by one, fellow council members told President Guy Ramsey as they walked into the Dec. 5 Macungie Borough Council meeting that they just could not vote on the budget all had agreed upon last week. Indeed, it was a long night before the six council members finally came to one very uneasy agreement involving a tax increase of three-quarters of a mil, or about $45,000. If approved, a tax increase of .75 of a mil would raise the real estate tax on a $150,000 home – assessed at $75,000 – by $56.25 per year. One by one, each coucil member unveiled his or her own 2012 budget proposal, none of which garnered even one vote other than its presenter’s. “We’re at an impasse,” Ramsey said as he started canvassing each member for the third – or maybe…

personally i would like to see borough services remain at their current level. i believe people who live in town want a certain level of service and are willing to pay for it that is why they live in town and not out in the lesser populated areas. but i agree the economy is down and borough revinues are down so hard decisions have to be made. i believe the above budget is a good compromise if …   more ›
