Willow Lane Update: Principal to Choose Parent Committee Members at Noon on Friday

Principal Anthony Moyer will choose parents from five developments.

Willow Lane Principal Anthony Moyer will populate the long-awaited parent committee at a public drawing at noon Friday at the school. In a letter to parents who expressed interest in being a part of the committee, he sent an open invitation to join him for the drawing. Ten parents will be chosen, two each from five developments that surround the school: Beaumont at Brookside, Brandywine Village I and II, Brookside Farms, and Graymoor. Moyer's letter also said that he plans to send another letter confirming participation on the committee along with the first meeting date. Twenty-three parents expressed an interest to join the committee -- too many for all to be included, Superintendent Thomas Seidenberger said at Monday's meeting.  …

East Penn Cuts 'Courtesy Busing' Limit in Half

The East Penn School Board changes its busing practice for elementary schools, shortening the distance students must live from schools to qualify for a bus ride.

East Penn Board of School Directors on Monday shortened the distance its elementary school students must live from schools to qualify to ride a school bus. In an 8-0 vote with one abstention, the board changed the district’s practice of providing busing to students who live 1.5 miles and farther from their schools to those who live within .75 of a mile. The practice of automatically providing busing to students who live within a certain distance of a school is called "courtesy busing." Currently all Willow Lane students are eligible to be bused. Next school year, 140 of those students who are currently being bused to Willow Lane Elementary School will lose the use of the bus. But Willow Lane Elementary School students, whose parents are in…

5 Things to Know About Willow Lane Busing

East Penn School Board makes no progress on Willow Lane busing issue.

For the most part Monday night’s meeting of the East Penn Board of School Directors was all about Willow Lane Elementary School busing, but no definitive action was taken nor was any progress made. 1. A motion to approve the site improvements for Willow Lane Elementary School, including traffic patterns, pavement striping, swing arm gates and enhancements to walking paths, was set aside until the board’s next meeting on March 11 to be sure that all interested community members have sufficient time to review the suggested improvements. 2. The school board meeting opened with a handful of Willow Lane parents addressing the board during the public comment portion, including Willow Lane parent Susan Coenen, who chastised the administration for…

Stolz’s Willow Lane Motion on School Board Agenda Tonight

East Penn School Director Julian Stolz proposed a motion at the Jan. 14 school board meeting that the district continue to fund buses for those Willow Lane Elementary School students now bused to school in the proposed 2013-2014 budget.

The controversy over who will and will not be bused to Willow Lane Elementary School in the fall continues to drive the agenda of the East Penn Board of School Directors. Tonight, the board will vote on a motion proposed by Director Julian Stolz at the board’s Jan. 14 meeting. If passed, the measure would direct the administration to continue to fund transportation for those Willow Lane students currently being bused to and from school in preparing the 2013-2014 school budget. Stolz has been a vocal proponent of maintaining district-provided transportation at Willow Lane at past school board meetings, stating that he puts the safety of the students first and foremost, above whatever cost savings East Penn School District might see from …

Matt word is Wescosville is not a candiate to get transporation cut inside of 1.5 miles because Brookside Rd. has no sidewalks. Apprently this forces the district by law to provide busses to most of those kids.   more ›

Confirmed: School Board Had No Notice of Willow Lane Meeting

East Penn School District says parents were notified about Nov. 27 'Walkability Study' meeting in a timely fashion. The district says it had no obligation to inform the board.

East Penn School District was criticized last week for what both Willow Lane parents and school board members have described as the administration’s failure to adequately publicize a Nov. 27 meeting to review the findings of a Willow Lane “Walkability Study.” East Penn Community Liaison Nicole Bloise confirms the board was never notified about the Nov. 27 meeting, but she says that is pretty much standard operating procedure as far as "parent meetings" are concerned. Some have said that even though school board members were not notified, the subject matter was important enough to mention it to them. The study and subsequent Nov. 27 meeting are the latest steps on the winding path to walking school status for Willow Lane Elementary School…

Donches: Lack of Notice on Willow Lane Meeting ‘Disturbing’

East Penn School Board Director Lynn Donches addresses fellow board members, administration at tail end of Monday night’s school board meeting about the district’s failure to publicize a Nov. 27 meeting about a Willow Lane walking study.

East Penn School Board Director Lynn Donches voiced concerns at the end of Monday night’s school board meeting regarding the failure to publicize a Nov. 27 meeting at which the East Penn School District presented the Willow Lane walking study that led 17 Willow Lane parents take the podium Monday night. As the result of a possible oversight, few people were aware of the Nov. 27 meeting that included parents of Willow Lane Elementary School students, an engineer and Willow Lane administrators. School board directors were neither invited nor notified. The Dec. 10 school board meeting included several rows of extra chairs that were added to accommodate the parents who came to the meeting try to convince board members it would be a bad idea to…

I am always in favor of child safety but from what I gather Willow was built on the premise because the walking feasibility study had been completed and verified as "walkable". Was this study completed or is this simply a result of a few well manicured stay out home moms who's children have asthma, nut allergies, seasonal allergies, sensitivity to light, sound, exhaust fumes, etc...if you know …   more ›

Willow Lane Busing Drives Parents to School Board Meeting

Willow Lane parents attend Monday night’s meeting to ask the East Penn School Board to rethink its plans to make Willow Lane a 'walking school' beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

It was pretty much standing room only at Monday night’s meeting of the East Penn Board as droves of Willow Lane Elementary School parents came to try to convince board members it would be a bad idea to make Willow Lane a “walking school” beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. Seventeen parents of Willow Lane students addressed the board for nearly one hour during the public comment portion, asking the board to rethink its decision regarding Willow Lane busing and offering to work with the board to come up with a solution that meets both the safety needs of the students and the financial concerns of the school district. The parents were driven to the board meeting, in part, by a Nov. 27 presentation of a Willow Lane walking study that …

Stolz Questions Seidenberger's Authority on Bus Decision

East Penn School Director Julian Stolz questions Superintendent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger’s right to make a decision about busing for Willow Lane Elementary School at Monday night’s East Penn School Board meeting.

Editor's Note: Paragraph four of this article has been modified to more accurately reflect a statement made by East Penn School Director Julian Stolz during Monday night's school board meeting.  Willow Lane busing continues to drive conversations in East Penn School District although it wasn’t actually on the agenda at Monday night’s meeting of the East Penn Board of School Directors. Board member Julian Stolz raised the issue following a report by East Penn Superintendent Thomas L. Seidenberger. Stolz asked School Board President Charles Ballard if, in approving Seidenberger’s report, the board was also approving his plan for Willow Lane busing Ballard told Stolz that there was nothing for the board to approve – Seidenberger’s report is …

What about that word "minion" which means follower, would that make Bacher a minion to Ballard and Earnshaw? Has Bacher ever stood on his own feet and felt strongly about a vote and gone against the votes of Ballard and Earnshaw who usually vote in the majority? If we want to talk about minions, seems like the majority has more of them which is what makes them the majority.   more ›

Willow Lane Bus Issue Advances

Motion to take $60,000 from the budgetary fund reserve to pay for buses for Willow Lane is tabled until the Aug. 13 meeting of the East Penn Board of School Directors.

The East Penn Board of School Directors voted 5-3 last night to table a motion to use $60,000 from the budgetary reserve fund to reinstate busing for students who live within 1.5 miles of Willow Lane Elementary School. The motion, made by School Director Julian Stolz, came at the end of a meeting that began with nearly 30 minutes of public comment by Willow Lane parents who came out to urge the board to reconsider its decision to eliminate busing for those Willow Lane students living within “walking distance” of the school. Do you think the East Penn Board of School Directors should reconsider its decision to eliminate busing at Willow Lane? Tell us in the comments. School Director Rebecca Heid made a motion to table Stolz’ motion before …

Willow Lane Busing Could Become Thing of Past Tonight

If the East Penn 2012-2013 district budget passes tonight in a similar form to the proposed final budget approved by the board on May 14, 2012, busing will be eliminated at Willow Lane Elementary School in Fall 2012.

The East Penn Board of School Directors will vote on the 2012-2013 school budget at tonight’s school board meeting. Unless there is a significant deviation between the spending plan put before the board tonight and the proposed final budget approved by the board at its May 14 meeting, busing at Willow Lane Elementary School will officially become a thing of the past when the board approves the final budget tonight. According to The Morning Call, when Willow Lane opened in 2010, the administration said that eventually busing would be stopped at the school. In past school board meetings focused on the 2012-2013 spending plan, the administration reported that the district will save about $60,000 by eliminating transportation for students who …
