Macungie Police Chief Clarifies Crosswalk Laws

Cars must stop for pedestrians in crosswalk.

Macungie resident Bill Reiss asked for a clarification of the borough's crosswalk law at the Oct. 17 council meeting. He was unclear about when a vehicle is to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, he said.  Mayor Rick Hoffman said at the Oct. 3 council meeting that he will enforce the crosswalk laws, making it safer for pedestrians to cross roads.  Reiss questioned what to do when people stand at or near the crosswalk but are not in it. “Must the pedestrian be in the crosswalk in order for the driver to stop or do they just have to be standing in front of the crosswalk?” he asked. “Will someone get a ticket because somebody is standing on the curb?" Police Chief Ed Harry then took the podium to answer Reiss’s questions.  He proceeded to …

another thing they need to do in macungie is use the crosswalk to cross. Already seen people open their vehicle doors towards traffic get out of their car and walk right across the road without even looking. What happened to what we were taught as children, look both ways before you cross. The only collisions that should occur with living things crossing the road are the collisions with animals. …   more ›

Macungie Mayor Gives 'Fair Warning'

Crosswalk laws and speed limits will be enforced.

When Rick Hoffman campaigned for the office of Macungie mayor in 2009, he promised residents he would slow down the traffic in the borough.  At the Oct. 3 meeting of Macungie Borough Council, now Mayor Hoffman announced he will act on his promise. “I am tired of seeing people ignore the laws,” he said.  “I have seen cars totally disregard the flashing lights in the crosswalk at Salvatore’s, nearly running people over when they are crossing the road.  People don’t stop for others in the crosswalk.” Hoffman referred to the crosswalk at Salvatore’s Pizzeria at 174 E Main St.  It is equipped with lights that flash as a person crosses the street, giving drivers ample warning that someone is in the crosswalk.  “In Macungie, we are going to start…

FYI I was curious about bump outs and islands on main street so I wrote the mayor. I got a reply back from a forward to the borough manager that the streetscape aspect of the master plan was put on hold as the police chief and fire chief deemed these improvements as unsafe. (Why? Who knows.....) Emmaus just installed islands on broad street. I'm going to try to find out why exactly these …   more ›

Tempers Flare With Discussion of Dangerous Intersection

However, Lower Macungie commissioners and parents agree the June 3 pedestrian accident sparks interest in improving crossroads around Willow Lane Elementary School.

Though about 50 concerned parents and residents waited patiently to speak at the June 16 meeting of the Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners, several left before they could express their opinions because of a lengthy hearing prior to the public comment section of the meeting. Their concerns involved a 6-year-old child who was hit by a car June 3 at the intersection of Willow and Sauerkraut lanes. Many people attended the festival at Willow Lane Elementary School that evening.  Commissioner President Roger Reis immediately agreed that, “Any accident involving a child is a sad event,”  before he proceeded to give an account of the accident: “Anybody who has children knows how fast they are,” Reis continued. “They know how quickly […
