The Parkland School District has released the following statement regarding Monday morning's fatal bus crash at the Upper Macungie Municipal Building: "Early this morning, a tragic accident occurred as one of Parkland’s longtime bus drivers departed to pick up her students. Kelly E. Smith, 42, passed away as a result of an accident. No students were on the bus at the time. There is speculation that she may have suffered some type of medical incident prior to or during the accident that made her lose control of her vehicle. Upon examination by emergency medical personnel, it was deemed that Kelly might have lost her life before losing control of the bus." Dr. Louise E. One person was killed when the bus plowed into the Upper Macungie municipal building.
Longtime Parkland school district bus driver Kelly Smith was killed when her bus crashed into the Upper Macungie municipal building at about 8 a.m. Monday. No students were on board when the accident happened at 8300 Schantz Road. Police say the bus side swiped a Ford Taurus and then swerved off the road, slamming into the building. Officials say a medical episode may have affected the bus driver. No serious injuries to the car's driver or passenger were reported. Smith, 42, was ejected from the bus. "She came out of the bus. I don't believe she was wearing a seatbelt," said Roger Heins, administrative sergeant of Berks-Lehigh Regional Police.
