Dino, the bed bug-sniffing beagle from Good Night, Sleep Tight, has indicated that there are no more bed bugs at the Lower Macungie Library.
On Monday, when bedbugs were found in DVDs returned through the bookdrop at the Lower Macungie Public Library, the DVDs and the pieces of rug that line the bookdrop were bagged tightly and discarded. That's also when the library was closed to the public, said Director Kathee Rhodes. The facility was then inspected by a local exterminator from Ehrlich, she said, but she wanted to go even further to ensure the library was pest free, so she called in Dino, the bed bug-sniffing beagle from Good Night, Sleep Tight to give the final word. Dino was very interested in one sofa and though an inspection revealed no bugs in it, it's gone gone gone, never to return, Rhodes said. "To assure there was not a big public health issue, we contained the …

It should reopen Wednesday or Friday at the latest, township manager says.
The Lower Macungie Library, which was closed Monday, continues to be closed today but should be open Wednesday, Bruce Fosselman, township manager said. "It will reopen on Friday at the latest. It's a bug issue," he said, but it is not yet known what kind of bugs are involved. Consequently, officials do not yet know if the library will have to be treated to get rid of them, Fosselman said. Fosselman said he would disclose the details once the bug is identified. What is known, however, is that library patrons need not fear for their safety or the safety of their children, Fosselman said. The Lower Macungie Community Center, which operates under the same roof as the library, remains open. Library patrons are being told that books due while …

Could be box elder bugs and/or Asiatic stinkbugs. Both are common here and try to come inside now, where it's warm. Just saw some box elder bugs on the floor of PNC bank yesterday. Not to worry, they won't harm you. The pesticides, however, will.   more ›
Lower Mac commissioners agreed in a contentious split vote to help fund the extension of its infrastructure that some said should have been done years ago.
Lower Macungie commissioners voted Sept. 6 in favor of making a financial investment to extend water lines in the vicinity of Brookside and Indian Creek roads. However, the vote was contentious as Commissioner Doug Brown challenged the wisdom of laying out about $55,000 for the project. Supporters of the project questioned the safety of the hundreds of children who visit the facility every day because there currently are no fire hydrants serving the community center building that also houses the library. The safety concern extends to township workers as well since there are no fire hydrants that protect the Lower Macungie Township Building either. Dale Dries, owner of Dries Do-It Center, approached the Board of Commissioners Thursday to …

Quakertown National Bank recently teamed up with the Lower Macungie Library to produce the second in a series of videos designed to teach kids about saving money. "Darth Spender," a distant cousin of Star Wars character Darth Vader, plays the bad guy, of course. QNB's own little buddy represents the voice of reason and intelligent spending. The video, for which QNB requested permission to film in the Lower Mac Library, is the second in a series. Children's librarian Erin Stephens said she will be sure to share it with Patch when its ready.

Business and Professional Women’s Club of the Lehigh Valley honors five local middle schoolers for their entries into the 14th Annual Women’s History Month Bookmark Contest.
On the surface, Women’s History Month and the childhood classic “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” may not seem to have a whole lot in common. But, for Eyer Middle School seventh-grader Justin Hower, the Beverly Cleary work served as the centerpiece of his winning entry into the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BWPC) of the Lehigh Valley’s 14th Annual Women’s History Month Bookmark Contest. Hower’s contest submission, which included an essay and a drawing about Cleary, took first place in this year’s competition. His work has been made into a bookmark, which was unveiled at a BWPC award program on March 19. Hower, as well as the second- and third-place winners, presented their winning essays during the program. Rina Hollinger, an Eyer …
