Should Pennsylvania Secede from the U.S.?

Petition on official White House website, We The People, has more than 1,000 signatures so far to secede.

The President won a decisive victory but there are still many disgruntled Americans who are not happy with the path Barack Obama has chosen and they want their home states to secede. Petitions from more than 30 states have been posted on the White House's 'We The People' website - where individuals can post petitions and voice concerns. If a petition gets more than 25,000 electronic signatures then the White House will respond. A petition for Pennsylvania reads: "Peacefully grant the State of Pennsylvania to withdraw from the United States of America and create a NEW government." On Tuesday morning, Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. there were 1,528 signatures.  Texas leads the effort with 63,910 signatures. Lousiana has more than 25,000. Of course there …

Dear Hollywood: That's Not What PA Sheriffs Do

New horror film highlights Patch editor's pet peeve about movies/shows set in Pennsylvania.

Editor's Note: Tom Coombe is the editor of the Easton Patch. I saw the new horror movie Sinister last weekend. It's about a true crime writer (Ethan Hawke) who discovers the subject of his latest book -- the murder of a family in Pennsylvania -- is connected to a series of similar killings that have been caught on film. Because his books have made various police departments look bad, the writer doesn't have a lot of fans in the law enforcement community. The movie illustrates this when Hawke's character moves into his new house...and is greeted by the local sheriff.  And this is where the horror nerd and local government nerd sides of my brain clash. Because as much as the horror nerd side wanted to immerse itself in the movie, the side …

Pa. Voter ID Law On Hold Until After Presidential Election

Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that implementation of Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election.

A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which said it would expedite any further action in the case since Election Day is just five weeks away. Do you agree with the ruling? Tell us in the comments section below. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard two days of testimony last week, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to get a photo ID in order to vote. Opponents say the law, and the process to get an ID, disenfranchises voters. Supporters say the law will prevent voter fraud - but that justification …

Sandusky Guilty: Is It the Right Call?

Jerry Sandusky probably will spend the rest of his life in prison. Do you agree with the verdict? Vote in our poll.

Disgraced ex-Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of child sex abuse Friday night, resulting in an effective life sentence for the 68-year-old. The guilty verdicts include 25 felony counts. Combined, Sandusky could be sentenced to 442 years in prison. Dressed in a brown sports coat, Sandusky immediately was taken into custody and led from the courthouse in handcuffs. The jury—which included many people with close ties to Penn State—deliberated for only 20 hours on 48 charges against Sandusky. The two-week trial featured damning testimony against Sandusky, who was accused of performing anal and oral sex on boys as young as 8. Despite the lack of physical evidence and the time lapse since the sex abuse, …

Vengeance is mine saith the Lord God. However on earth, the man should never ever be allowed free to encounter children. I doubt be will have it as difficult in prison as he deserves. If I were his family I would legally change my name. Seriously, that man cannot have the conscience to admit ANYTHING he did. Disgusting.   more ›

Anti-Texting Law Goes Into Effect Today

Texting behind the wheel can now get you pulled over.

Pennsylvania's new law prohibiting texting while driving started at 12:01 a.m. this morning. Under the law, texting while driving becomes a primary offense -- meaning something that can get you pulled over -- carrying a $50 fine. In 2010, there were nearly 14,000 crashes in Pennsylvania where distracted driving played a role. Sixty-eight of those crashes involved a fatality. “Your most important job when behind the wheel is to focus only on driving," PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said.  "Most people would never close their eyes for five seconds while driving, but that’s how long you take your eyes of the road, or even longer, every time you send or read a text message."  The new law specifically does the following: “This is a serious …
