Share Your Macungie Snow Photos on Patch

The winter storm a week before Valentine's Day showed Macungie a little love when it turned out to be milder than expected.

Friday night's snow gave way to a beautiful sugar-coated Saturday in Macungie. Check out Jasper, the Macungie mascot that stands guard outside the Macungie Institute. He looks a little more Casper than Jasper coated in snow. Add your snow photos to the ones accompanying this article. To do so, click the green words above this article that say Upload Photos and Videos and follow the simple prompts. (If you don't have a Patch account, it's free and easy to create one.) Sunday will be sunny with a high of 34 degrees but freezing rain may begin after 1 a.m. The National Weather Service said the freezing rain is expected to continue into Monday morning.

Snowy Saturday in Macungie

After a slow start, snow piled up to drop a few inches and make roads slippery.

With most people not working on Saturday, the snowfall that we woke to provided most of us with something to watch on a lazy morning into the afternoon. The snow was light to begin with, but by late morning picked up in intensity and had dropped about 2 inches into the early afternoon. Accumulation is expected to be 3 to 5 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Snow is expected to taper off this evening. Although some outerlying areas were reporting accidents, mostly on secondary roads, none was reported in the Macungie, Lower Macungie or Alburtis areas by 2 p.m.

Major Snowstorm Could Hit Eastern Pa. Next Week

Forecasters are keeping a close eye on computer models that show a big snowstorm could be headed to eastern Pennsylvania around Dec. 19-20

Update 11 a.m. Thursday: WFMZ reports a storm is looking increasingly likely for Tuesday-Wednesday but the big question is whether it will be rain or snow. The National Weather Service predicts a chance of rain/snow on Tuesday night. Original Story: It could be much more than a White Christmas if the Lehigh Valley gets one to two feet of snow next week. The Eastern Pa. Weather Authority says a potentially "monstrous" storm is showing up on a European weather model, according to the following post on the group's Facebook page: Update on next week's storm potential.... this is as monstrous of a storm you can get just about, as modeled on today's 12z European model run. This would be, if correct, a "KU" storm... or one for the history books. …

Photo of the Day

Fun While it Lasted

Brief morning snowstorm only turns out to be a novelty.

If you slept in this morning, you probably missed it . . . the snow, that is. With temperatures hovering right at the freezing mark, snow began to fall in the East Penn area before 8 this morning. Intense at times, the snowfall provided a white curtain that somewhat challenged visibility at times and quickly laid on cars and eventually roads. But just as driving might have begun to get tricky, blue skies emerged around 9 a.m. and the snowfall ended. Snow on the roadways quickly melted, and the thin layer on grass and rooftops soon followed. The brief but intense storm was just a tease for the snow-starved among us.

East Penn Parents Will Have Emergency Bus Plan in a Week

Superintendent of schools Thomas L. Seidenberger tells East Penn Board of School Directors that he's been working with First Student to create an alternate route bus plan in the aftermath of the Oct. 29 snowstorm.

Thomas L. Seidenberger is being driven crazy by school busses. Or, more specifically, the challenges he faced in getting busses around the district safely in the wake of the unusual October snowstorm that left many East Penn residents without power for the better part of a week. The East Penn Superintendent of Schools told the school board at last night’s meeting that he has been working closely with the school district’s bus company, First Student, to develop an emergency bus route/bus stop plan that will be mailed to all families in the East Penn School District in about a week. “We are not going to risk sending it electronically,” Seidenberger said, stressing how important it is that everyone in the district has this information at his …

I must say this is a real shock to be informed an emergency plan for transporting students has not been in place in the East Penn School District. Or is it being revised? Spring Creek has been a problem for 40 years. Can this be true that you are just now realizing this fact?   more ›

Storm, Power Outage Cripple Emmaus

Saturday's heavy snowfall leaves Emmaus, Upper Milford in the dark

Residents of Emmaus borough and Upper Milford Township are among the more than 100,000 Lehigh Valley residents stripped of electricity as a result of Saturday's rare October snow storm. Thousands of families endured cold, dark nights Saturday and Sunday. A borough police officer told Patch on Sunday that he did not know of anybody in town with power. PPL reported 6,438 out of power in the borough and 2,889 in the township as of 7 p.m. Sunday, making it one of the hardest hit areas of Lehigh County. PPL says restoring power may take several days. In some areas, major repairs to the system's transmission lines, transformers and circuit breakers are needed. Several traffic lights are not working. Those still functioning are operating on …

It's Ba-a-a-ck . . . Snow, That Is

Pre-Halloween storm is a trick but no treat for region.

The forecast leading up to today just didn't seem possible. Snow, and it wasn't even Halloween yet. As if promises of a tease of a snowfall weren't enough, updated forecasts called for several inches. But would it really happen? The region had its answer as snow fell by morning. The snow was plentiful and it was heavy, so much so that by late morning the weight was pulling down electrical lines, causing minor fires and power outages. At 3 p.m., PPL was reporting nearly 5,900 in Lower Macungie Township were without power. (For current power-outage information, click here.) The National Weather Service refers to the snowfall as a "major early season winter storm." The region can expect 8-12 inches of snow, tapering off between 10 p.m. and …

Similarly, thank you, Jan. There was much beauty and Halloween fun to be seen when out and about on Saturday. Unfortunately, the heavy snow that helped make those scenes created much havoc. But again, thanks for noticing and taking time to say so. Thanks also to our viewer from Alburtis for bringing an additional image to viewers. We always encourage participation to make it as complete as …   more ›
