The five-day holiday driving period took saw 13 deaths in 2012, police say.

HARRISBURG—Thirteen people were killed in crashes investigated by state troopers during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday driving period, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan announced this week. In addition to the 13 fatalities, 349 people were injured in 1,124 crashes troopers responded to during the official holiday driving period, Wednesday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 25. Five of the people killed were not wearing seat belts and two of the 13 fatal crashes were alcohol-related. Overall, 86 of the 1,124 total crashes were alcohol-related. "Drivers must insist that all passengers wear a seat belt. They work best when everyone is buckled and children are properly restrained in the back seat,’’ Noonan said in a press release. State …

Vehicle Theft Reported in Shepherd Hills

Not just petty theft this time, police say.

So much has been made lately about relatively petty thefts from vehicles in Lower Macungie, but a township woman probably wishes that were all that was taken from her. Instead of just a few items being stolen from her car, someone made off with the whole vehicle, according to state police at Fogelsville. Police did not give a vehicle description, including color, or registration number. Stacey Bowen reported that her 2007 Volkswagen Passat was stolen from her residence at 1203 Eagle St., police said. Police did not offer a value on the car, but a suggested retail value for an average 2007 Passat is $13,400, according to Kelly Blue Book.

Bag of Feces Greets Another Lower Mac Resident

That and derogatory remark written on driveway lead to disorderly conduct complaint, police say.

They say what's old is new again, but -- in this case -- you're not likely to find much nostalgia. Two recent occurrences may not make for a trend, but an incident in Lower Macungie Township was the second in recent times involving feces being used as the weapon of choice. Harkening back a bit, the referenced old gag was to place feces in a bag, light the bag on fire and ring a doorbell. The startled owner, seeing the flame, would stomp on the bag and . . . well, you can figure out the rest if, in fact, you weren't already familiar with the gag. Skipping ahead, and regardless of the motivation, Susan Harvey of 1453 Walnut Lane reported June 28 to state police at Fogelsville that someone had put feces in a plastic bag in her mailbox. She …

Nah it sounds to me like too many people in lower macungie complain about dogs, and this is a payback. Would not surprise me, they complain about kids and kids being bused to the willow lane school, so a dog is the next defenseless thing to complain about.   more ›

Police: Two More Air-Conditioners Shoplifted from Wal-Mart

Shopper walks out of Lower Mac Wal-Mart without paying for the units, they say.

Several accounts in recent months have listed arrests of shoppers for some pretty daring alleged attempts at retail theft at Wal-Mart in Lower Macungie Township. The most recent notable charges came June 12 when an Allentown woman grabbed several televisions, laptops and other items valued at $2,011.71, according to state police at Fogelsville. We're not talking about a few items that could be slipped into a purse and valued at a few dollars here. We're talking bulky, big-boxed stuff. At least two others have been stopped in recent weeks for allegedly trying to steal air-conditioners from the store at 1091 Mill Creek Road.  Again, these are scarcely items that can be concealed in a back pocket. But a recent big-ticket-item shoplifter …

Boss Fronts Bail but Worker Not in Jail

Partner in Lower Mac business is victim of scam, paying money to bail employee out of jail, police say.

So much is made today about a lack of employer-employee loyalty, but a Lower Macungie businessman was scammed recently when he paid money to bail a worker out of jail, police said. The problem was, the worker wasn't in jail. William Dennis Ouellette Jr., listed online as a managing partner of Texas Roadhouse, 6268 Hamilton Blvd., received a call from a man about 11 a.m. June 29, according to state police at Fogelsville. The caller told Ouellette, who lives in Blandon, Berks County, that one of his employees had been arrested and needed bail money. The caller, who identified himself as a "law enforcement officer," said money should be sent by wire transfer to an unknown individual, police said. Ouellette sent an amount of money that was not…

Lower Mac Thieves Love Unlocked Cars

A wallet alone was not good enough for one Lower Mac car burglar.

Was the wallet just a tease to a petty thief looking for more or was that petty thief just a bit snobbish? Either way, after entering the unlocked vehicle of Lorraine Ziello in her driveway at 2920 Sequoia Drive on June 15, that thief tossed the wallet on the car's floor and left without taking anything, according to police. The attempted theft from a motor vehicle was reported at 9:15 p.m. to state police at Fogelsville. Presumably finding nothing of interest, the thief left. Whether similar acts within a few days were done by the same person or someone else, the following thefts from motor vehicles also were reported: -- Robert Kreiger of the 7000 block of Tuscany Drive said a GPS was taken from his unlocked vehicle between 7 p.m. June …

Willow Lane Elementary Vandalized

Not a banner day at the a Lower Macungie Township school.

The East Penn School District has taken pride in Willow Lane Elementary School, which just completed its second school year. So, it ruffled a few feathers at the home of the Incredible Hawks when one or more people recently tore down one of the banners in front of the school. The banners hang from several of the light poles and say "Willow Lane Elementary Incredible Hawks" and show the mascot. One was torn from its mounts between 4 p.m. June 18 and 4:30 a.m. June 20, according to a report filed with state police at Fogelsville. It does not appear that the banner was taken, because the incident is classified as criminal mischief rather than theft. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 610-395-1438. The school's principal, …

Wal-Mart Reports Attempted $2,011 Theft

Woman tries to make off with televisions, laptops and other merchandise from the Lower Mac Supercenter, police say.

There seems to be a new leader in the apparent contest to see who can steal the most valuable merchandise from the Wal-Mart in Lower Macungie Township. The major problem for the unofficial new champion is that her alleged exploits became publicly known through police reports, meaning some negative consequences are the likely result. According to state police at Fogelsville, Morgan Mae Williams, 19, of Easton found a good deal of success June 12 while picking out items of interest at Wal-Mart. Williams selected several televisions, laptop computers and other unspecified items totaling $2,011.71, police said. However, when she attempted to leave the store about 6:40 p.m. without paying, police said, the shopping spree took a decidedly …
