Vending Machine Thief Snags $430, Police Say

Someone breaks into four vending machines at entrance to Lower Macungie store, troopers report.

Have you spent endless hours -- and quarters -- at a grocery store trying to beat those crane-like vending machines to snag candy or a plush animal? Or maybe you wanted a certain prize inside one of those gumball-type machines, but you got the junky one instead. Someone recently took a different approach in trying to outsmart these machines at Walmart in Lower Macungie Township by skipping the "payload" of prizes and just going for silver in the coinbox left by previous players, according to state police at Fogelsville. Police said that someone between Feb. 25 and March 4 entered the coin boxes of four vending machines at the entrance to the store at 1091 Mill Creek Road and stole a total of $430. The machines are owned by National …

Porn Target of Late-Night Burglary, Police Say

Lower Macungie burglar enters shed, finds adult magazines and views them in victim's garage at about 1:30 a.m., troopers report.

There's probably only one person who really knows what was going on here. According to a police report, that person is a 5-foot-9 man who was wearing gray sweatpants, black sneakers and a black hooded sweatshirt. For the rest of us, there's a lot of head scratching to be done. The man wearing the sweatshirt about 1:30 a.m. Thursday entered an unattached shed belonging to Joseph W. Woomer of 7582 Quarry Road, according to state police at Fogelsville. There, the prowler found a box of adult magazines. He took that box to the victim's attached garage and placed the container inside on the floor, leaving one magazine open, police said. The man in the sweatshirt fled on foot, last seen headed west toward Sauerkraut Lane. It wasn't clear whether…

Heiress Linny Fowler Scammed Out of $1 Million, DA Says

Allentown man and woman told philanthropist Linny Fowler they needed money for a sick child, but spent her money instead on clothing, travel and gambling, DA John Morganelli says.

Marlene “Linny” Fowler was well-known in the Lehigh Valley for her generosity, giving millions of dollars away to institutions, causes and individuals she thought needed the money. But according to a Northampton County grand jury, two Allentown residents who got more than $1.2 million of the late UPS heiress’ money were taking advantage of her generous spirit. On Friday, Shawnta Equana Carmon, 32, of 27 West St., and Hassan Rahman Carmon, 34, of 848 N. 16th St., were each arraigned on four felony theft counts. Both were committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail. Shawnta Carmon took more than $1.15 million from Fowler during a four-and-a-half-year period that started in January 2008 and ended in August, according to …

Linny Fowler was clearly a wonderful woman. That her kindness, or perhaps late life health, interferred with her judgement about motives will hopefully be made right by DA John Morganelli. The crime here is that resources might have been directed to more worthy use than feeding scamsters. Now the public will most likely pay to incarcerate the the scamsters so the loss to the public continues.   more ›

Log Splitter Wheeled From Lower Mac Yard, Police Say

State troopers say the $1,500 device was wheeled across several nearby yards in Macungie, but need help in tracking its whereabouts.

State police at Fogelsville are hoping that the industrious-looking person who was toting a log splitter across some backyards of Ridings Circle in Macungie this weekend impressed some neighbors. So is Michael J. Weber Jr. They're all hoping that the act was impressive enough to be memorable and that a witness can tell them who stole the log splitter that Weber had at his home at 3113 Sequoia Drive not far away in Lower Macungie Township. The log splitter was taken either Saturday or Sunday, police said. It was taken from the victim's backyard and wheeled across several backyards in The Ridings housing development. Police were not specific as to how they knew, but it's likely that tracks were left behind. The splitter was described as …

Cashier Charged with Thefts from Walmart, Police Say

Thefts from cash register and food and drink on numerous occasions totaled near $200 at Lower Macungie store, troopers report.

If you follow the police items on Lower Macungie Patch, you know that Walmart is a frequent unintentional contributor. While there are other area stores where retail theft occurs, Walmart is by far and away the unofficial leader. From air conditioners to Yugioh cards to televisions to cosmetics to more air conditioners (seemed they were a summer favorite), Walmart has been where the action is. That trend continued late into last year, the only difference was that police say the thief was a cashier, not a customer at the 1091 Mill Creek Road store. According to state police at Fogelsville, Michael Joseph Donnelly, 44, of Catasauqua on 26 occasions took money totaling $94 from a cash register. He also on 16 occasions took food or drink …
