Macungie 'Devil's Brigade' Vet Meets Pat Toomey

Sen. Pat Toomey seeks Congressional Gold Medal for members of the World War II 'Devil's Brigade.'

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey of Zionsville, Lehigh County, recently met Bertram Winzer, of Macungie, a member of one of America's first Special Operations units, the 1st Special Service Force, also known as the “Devil's Brigade.”

Pennsylvania is home to six Devil's Brigade veterans—the most of any state.  During World War II, the Devil's Brigade was a top-secret combat force of volunteers from the United States and Canada. Its high-risk missions figured prominently in the liberations of Italy and France.

Toomey is currently working to honor Winzer and others in the brigade with the Congressional Gold Medal, which represents the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
